Women's volleyball closes first half with sweep over Bisons

WINNIPEG – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies completed a weekend road sweep of the University of Manitoba Bisons with a 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-17, 25-19) win Saturday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

Taylor Annala led the Huskies in the win with 13 kills. Regan Wiebe, Georgia Hurry and Emily Koshinsky each recorded nine. Wiebe also had 14 digs.

For the Bisons, Allison Alock led the offence recording 10 kills, while Cassie Bujan had 13 digs.

With the win, the Huskies close the first half of the Canada West women's volleyball season at 6-6. Manitoba is 5-7. Saskatchewan is on a three-game winning streak.

The Huskies had a large nine-point lead at 19-10 in the first set. Annala posted five kills helping Saskatchewan win 25-19. 

The Bisons held the led through the second set. Brittany Habing and Alcock put up a wall, gaining two consecutive points with their blocks in the final five points of the set. The Bisons had 14 block in the set, winning 25-17 after a right-side kill down the line by Alcock.

Manitoba gained an 8-2 lead in the third, but Huskies tied it up, and pulled ahead mid-set by five points at 21-16. Hurry set up a difficult block for the Bisons to hit past, and  Wiebe posted two kills in the final points, finishing the set for Saskatchewan 25-17.

Saskatchewan pulled ahead halfway through the fourth and held the lead in the deciding set for the 25-19 win.

Both teams return to the court January 5-6. The Huskies return home to host the Regina Cougars, while the Bisons' travel to Vancouver to meet the UBC Thunderbirds.
