The University of Saskatchewan track & field program has a strong tradition of winning. Since 1967, the men’s and women’s teams have won a combined 38 conference championships and 12 national titles. In 2004-05, the team became the second in history to win both the men’s and women’s national titles in the same year.
The first Canada West title in both men’s and women’s track & field was handed out in 1967-68 – the Huskie men won the title that year. In 1980-81, a national championship began for both teams. The Huskie women's track & field team has won three of the last five Canada West Championship titles. The Huskie men's track & field team was crowned Canada West champions for the 18th time in program history in 2012-13. The title was the first for the men since 2006-07. Saskatchewan added its 19th title at home in 2015-16.
Huskie Athletics track & field teams were led by well-respected head coach Lyle Sanderson from 1965 to 2004 before Ivan Tam and, then, Joanne McTaggart took over the team. In 2017, Jason Reindl was named the first full-time head coach of the track & field program. He will also be head coach for the cross country program.
