Women's soccer splits weekend road trip in Manitoba

WINNIPEG – Two second half goals lifted the University of Manitoba Bisons 3-2 over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday at the U of M Turf Fields in the opening weekend of Canada West women's soccer.

Both the Bisons and the Huskies open the season 1-1. 

Manitoba opened the scoring in the 25th minute when midfielder Sara Shur got on the end of a cross from Hailey Lavarius. 

Rookie Huskies midfielder Megan Ripplinger tallied her third goal of the opening weekend in the 53rd minute. She beat out a rushing Justina Jarmoszko and tapped the ball into the far corner.

The Bisons regained the lead in the 55th minute when Florin Wagner scored her first of two off a free kick from the half way line. She added her second in the 84th minute when Wagner pounced on a loose ball in the six-yard box to make it 3-1. Saskatchewan pushed for a combeack and in the 8tth minute Taneil Gay connected on a rebound to make it 3-2.  The Huskies pushed late in injury time but were unable to find the equalizer.

The Bisons head out on the road next weekend to play the Victoria Vikes and the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, while the Saskatchewan Huskies will host Thompson Rivers and UBC Okanagan at home.
