SASKATOON – Scoring two third period goals in a 3-1 win, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies completed the weekend sweep over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night in Rutherford Rink.
Tied after 40 minutes, Huskie rookie Abby Shirley scored at 3:53 into the third to give Saskatchewan the lead. After the Huskies came out with the puck on a scramble behind the net, Shirley's shot from the left side beat 'Horns goalie Alicia Anderson into the upper net glove side for the lead.
Captain Kaitlin Willoughby added the insurance empty goal at 19:23 to seal the win.
With the weekend sweep, Saskatchewan improves to 11-6-1. The 'Horns drop to 5-11-2. A night earlier, the Huskies won 2-0.
Lethbridge opened the scoring at 8:42 in the second period on an odd-man rush up the ice. A quick pass from Katelyn Breitkruez into the neutral zone sprung Keely Chalk and Kyra Greig free. Greig's shot beat Huskies' netminder Jessica Vance stick side.
The Huskies' evened the score eight minutes later on a two-on-one of their own. Brooklyn Haubrich fed a quick pass to Willoughby who beat Anderson glove side at 16:24 for her first of the game.
Pronghorns captain Mattie Apperson had the best chance to even the game in the final two minutes of the third period. With a wide open net on the right side, Apperson's shot was blocked just in time by Vance with 1:26 left.
Anderson finished the game making 26 saves, while Vance stopped 18 in the win for the Huskies.
Saskatchewan travels to Winnipeg to meet the Manitoba Bisons next weekend, while the 'Horns return to Alberta for a home-and-home series with the Mount Royal Cougars.
