Women's hockey closes first half of season with win

SASKATOON – Fifth-year captain Kaitlin Willoughby lifted the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 1-0 victory over the University of Regina Cougars Saturday night in Rutherford Rink.

Willoughby recorded the games only goal at the 11:50 mark of the second period. Her one-timer was stopped but not covered by Cougar goalie Jane Kish. The rebound stayed in front of Kish and Willoughby bee-lined to the net and found the puck to shove it past the second-year Cougar goalie.

Second-year goalie Jessica Vance earned her third shutout of the season with 27 saves – 16 in the first period. At the other end of the ice, Kish stopped 23 of the 24 shots she faced.

The Huskies record improves to 9-6-1, while the Cougars fall to 7-8-1. A night earlier in Regina, the Cougars shutout the Huskies 2-0 in Regina.  It was the final weekend of the first half of Canada West women's hockey in the 2017-18 season.

In the New Year, the Huskies will start the second half of the season at home against the Lethbridge Pronghorns on January 5-6. The Cougars travel to Calgary to meet the Mount Royal Cougars on the same weekend.
