REGINA, Sask. - Jane Kish made 31 saves for her third shutout of the season as the University of Regina women's hockey team took a 2-0 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.
Martina Maskova and Tamara McVannel were the goal scorers for the Cougars, who move to 6-7-1-1 after taking the first game of the home-and-home series.
The same week Maskova was named to the Czech Republic national team she scored her first goal at the U SPORTS level. The first-year forward took a feed from Jordan Kulbida and flipped a backhand over the shoulder of Chloe Marshall, putting the Cougars up a goal just 2:42 into the contest.
McVannel added an insurance marker on the powerplay in the second period, sending a wrist shot from the point in the direction of Marshall. The puck deflected off a Huskie defender on the way and slipped through the pads of Marshall as the McVannel picked up her fifth goal of the season. Emma Waldenberger and Jaycee Magwood picked up assists on the goal.
The two-goal cushion was more than enough for Kish, who stopped 10 shots in the second period and 12 more in the third as the Huskies threw everything they had in the direction of the third-year Weyburn product.
Kish totalled 31 saves on the night to pick up her second-consecutive shutout, while Marshall made 17 saves as Saskatchewan falls to 8-6-0-1.
The Cougars and Huskies will battle again on Saturday night, heading to Saskatoon for an evening puck drop at the Rutherford Rink.
