Lethbridge – Freshman Ali Borrow picked an opportune time to pick up her first career Canada West goal, scoring the overtime winner with just less than a minute left in the first overtime to give the Lethbridge Pronghorns a 2-1 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies.
Borrow took a pass in near the Huskie blue line, beat one Huskie defender and snapped a shot from the slot, beating Huskie goaltender Jacey Book glove side.
'Horns goaltender Alicia Anderson was stellar in the crease as Pronghorn fans have come to expect, making 44 saves and weathered an early Huskie storm to keep the Pronghorns close. Book finished her night with a 20 save performance.
The win improves the Pronghorns' record to two overtime wins, one loss and four points, while the Huskies record now moves to one regulation win, one loss and one overtime loss for four points.
The Pronghorns struggled with the Huskies' speed and persistence early in the first and the Huskies were rewarded just over two minutes into the game. Elizabeth Salyn opened the scoring with a tap-in after Rachel Lundberg found her alone with a shot pass at the side of the Pronghorns' net.
The Huskies continued to pepper Anderson in the opening frame, registering 23 shots in the period but could not beat her a second time.
As the period went on, the Pronghorns began to get a few opportunities, finishing the first period with nine shots. Tricia Van Vaerenbergh had the two best looks, but couldn't beat Huskie keeper Jacey Book.
Turning the tables on the Huskies, the Pronghorns had the better of the play early in the second period and before the period was three minutes old, the Pronghorns would tie the game at one. Fourth-year forward Brett Campbell collected a rebound off Jodi Gentile's point shot and jammed home her first of the season.
Now energized after the tying goal, the Pronghorns swarmed the Huskies with Tricia Van Vaerenbergh, Katie Breitkreuz and Mackenzie Gal having good looks but Book had an answer for each of them.
Slowly the Huskies began to take the majority of the play back from the Pronghorns, outshooting the Pronghorns 11 to 6 in the period but Anderson was outstanding the back half of the period. With time winding down in the frame, she robbed Bailee Bourassa on what looked like a sure goal, scrambling to get a glove on the in-tight shot.
In the third, the Huskies peppered Anderson once again with 13 more shots but the Huskies could not find that elusive go ahead goal, setting the stage for Borrow to give the Pronghorns their second overtime win in three games.
The Pronghorns and Huskies will be back at it tomorrow night, puck drops at Nicholas Sheran Arena at 7:00pm. The game will also be streamed live onhttp://canadawest.yaretv.com/.
