The University of Saskatchewan Huskies officially began competing in national interuniversity competition in men’s cross country in 1964-65. The sport was incepted into the Canada West Universities Athletic Association as a sport for both men and women when the conference was formed in 1971-72. A national title for women was established in 1980-81.
A men’s cross country race is 10-kilometres, while the women’s is five-kilometres.
In 1968-69, The Huskie men’s cross country team won Huskie Athletics first-ever national CIAU (CIS) title under the tuteleage of longtime Huskie Athletics track & field coach Lyle Sanderson. The team has finished four times in second place – 1966, 1969, 1970 and 1979 – as well as once in third– 1983. The group has also been crowned conference champions twice - 1978-79 and 1979-80. The women’s best national finish was a third place in 1997.
In 2000, Jamie Epp became the first Huskie to win the national race. He did it again in 2002. Epp, along with Bob Kochan, are the four-time All-Canadians. Tracy Kelly had the best results ever for the Huskie women’s team finishing third in 1981. Four women have finished first at the conference level - Tracy Kelly in 1981, Edyta Sieminska in 2002, Jodi Souter in 2009 and Caitlin Warkentin in 2010.
