Dr. Donald "Doc” Rawson formed the university wrestling club in 1929. While studying biology at the University of Toronto, he was a member of the intervarsity team and welterweight title holder in 1925, 1926 and 1927. The first U of S intercollegiate competition was held on February 29, 1936 when four of our wrestlers went to Edmonton and were victorious in the first "Assault-at-Arms”. These early events included boxing and fencing. Dr. Rawson coached wrestling until 1952 when Howard Nixon took the reigns.
The University of Saskatchewan Huskie wrestling program is rich in history. The program flourished in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s under the likes of well-known Huskie alumni - Gord Garvie, Ches Anderson and Howard Nixon.
A strong high school program continually introduced Saskatchewan’s young athletes to the sport of wrestling and as a result, the Huskies celebrated much success. Huskie Athletics earned Canada West men’s wrestling titles in 1981-82, 1982-83, 1983-84 and 1985-86.
In 1996, the Huskie wrestling program hired Todd Hinds and under his guidance the program has become rejuvenated with increases in numbers, profile and performance. In 2008-09, the women’s wrestling team finished third in the CIS – the best placing ever since women’s wrestling was introduced to the CIS in 1999.
In 2011, Daniel Olver made Huskie Athletics history winning his fifth straight Canada West gold medal. He also won five medals at the CIS level. In 2013, Olver was named head coach of the program.
The 2016 season is considered the most successful in 20 years for the program. Saskatchewan's men were crowned Canada West champions, while the women finished second. A year later, the Huskie women's team was crowned Canada West champions for the first-time in history.
