CALGARY – After dropping the opening set, the University of Calgary Dinos men's volleyball team rebounded and clinched a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-15, 26-24, 25-15) over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday night.
It was a tough start to the game for the Dinos, who had returned home after spending the past two weekends on the road. Calgary would trail by as many as seven points and were unable to overcome the deficit as they fell 25-23. To make matters worse, the team would lose outside hitter Regan Fathers who sustained an injury during the opening set.
Despite the grim outset, the Dinos rallied in the second and put together a complete performance, taking the set 25-15.
The Dinos proceeded to take the third and fourth sets with strong defensive performances from Brett Bolin and Liam Laidlaw, as well as a fantastic offensive effort from Alex Bader who led the team with 14 kills.
Saskatchewan was close to taking the third set as they had Calgary on their heels late in the frame. The Huskies picked up three straight points to take a 21-17 advantage, but the Dinos came roaring back to take the frame in extras.
The Huskies got a huge performance from Colin Fraser, who notched 17 kills, while CJ Gavlas contributed with a team-leading 23 assists and 10 digs.
The Dinos and Huskies will meet again on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. start from the Jack Simpson Gym. Catch all the action on CanadaWest.tv.
