SASKATOON – The University of Winnipeg Wesmen remained perfect on the year as they completed the weekend sweep of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in 3-2 (12-25, 25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 15-12) Saturday night on Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the PAPC.
The Winnipeg attack was led by fifth-years Taylor Howe and David Bommersbach. Howe recorded 13 kills and three digs, while Bommersbach recorded 12 kills and eight digs. Third-year Mikael Clegg would provide a match-high 40 assists added eight digs.
The Wesmen win kept their record perfect at 6-0, while the Huskies are still in search of a victory at 0-6.
In the first set with the score at 10-8, the Huskies put together a 6-1 run that fuelled them the rest of the way. Third-year Daulton Sinoski took over the service late in the set and recorded back-to-back aces to start a 4-0 run to clinch it for the Saskatchewan, winning 25-12.
The Wesmen would get off to a much better start in the second, building a 10-3 lead that was too much for Saskatchewan to recover from. Winnipeg would take the second set, 25-18.
The third set mimicked the second, as Winnipeg would once again build a comfortable 10-3 lead. Three Howe kills down the stretch would secure the set for the Wesmen, 25-14.
In the fourth, Saskatchewan would take over the service with the score at 6-6 and fire off a 4-0 run that forced a Winnipeg timeout. The Huskies would protect the slim lead from there on in the set, forcing a fifth and deciding set with the 25-23 win.
Trading points early in the fifth, Winnipeg put together a 6-0 run that gave the Huskies no room for error. Despite a late 3-0 rally by Saskatchewan, Winnipeg would secure the match victory with a 15-12 win in the final set.
Saskatchewan enters a bye-week, as their next series will be November 17-18 in Calgary. Winnipeg returns home to host the Calgary Dinos next weekend.
