SASKATOON – The Trinity Western University Spartans completed the weekend sweep of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday evening at the PAC, winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-22).
It was the first series of the 2017-18 Canada West men's volleyball season for both teams. A night earlier, the Spartans won 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-21).
Trinity Western started the match with a comfortable 11-0 lead in the first set. Both teams would trade points for the rest of the set, however, the slow start for the Huskies was too big to overcome. Spartans took the first set, 25-15.
The second set featured a better start by the Huskies as first-year Dylan Mortensen put away a kill to bring the Huskies within two at 8-6. Unfortunately for the dogs, that's the smallest gap they would see in the set.
Saskatchewan got within two at 8-6 in the second set, but it was as close as they would come. Despite a late 4-0 run by the Huskies, a couple of offensive errors would give Trinity Western the win in set two, 25-19.
In the third set, the Huskies played much better with their backs against the wall, jumping out 11-6 lead. The biggest Huskie lead of the match was quickly erased as Trinity Western went on a 10-2 run en route to the 25-22 win.
Dylan Mortensen led the Huskies, recording a game-high 11 kills, while adding three digs. For the Spartans, Jesse Elser led with seven kills and Adam Schriemer had a game-high 25 assists.
The Huskies will travel to Brandon to take on the Bobcats next weekend, while Trinity Western travels back home to take on the UBC Okanagan Heat.
