Men's hockey wins big over Cougars to close regular season

SASKATOON – Five different University of Saskatchewan Huskies scored in a 7-2 win over the Mount Royal University Cougars Saturday night in Rutherford Rink.

Carson Stadnyk and John Lawrence each tallied twice, while Collin Shirley, Kohl Bauml and Alex Forsberg added goals. Shirley added a pair of assists and Jordan Tkatch had three helpers. 

With the weekend sweep, the No. 5 ranked Huskies close the Canada West men's hockey season 20-7-1 and in second place. The Cougars finish 12-14-2 and in sixth. A night earlier, the Huskies won 4-2.

Both teams advance to the Canada West postseason. The Cougars will travel to meet the Manitoba Bisons in a best-of-three quarter-final next weekend, while the Huskies have a bye into the semifinal and will await a winner from the quarter-final round. 

Stadnyk struck first scoring at 6:26 and 13:17 in the first period. Lawrence would add his first of the game short-handed just 26 seconds before the period ended at 19:34. The Huskies scored three more goals before the Cougars tallied in the game. Lawrence scored his second at 5:21, followed by Shirley at 9:01 and Bauml at 12:03 on the power play.

Austin Adamson gave the Cougars some life with a goal at 16:16 and David Stephens added the team's second just three minutes later at 19:07.

Forsberg scored the final Huskies' goal at 8:36 in the third period on the power play. 

Taran Kozun made 26 saves in the win for the Huskies, while Wyatt Hoflin stopped 26 for the Cougars in the loss. 

The Huskies will return the ice February 22-24 for the semifinal in Rutherford Rink. Mount Royal's series starts February 16th in Winnipeg.
