SASKATOON – Third-year forward Levi Cable scored 1:08 into overtime to lift the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 4-3 over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds Friday night in Rutherford Rink.
Cable's stick was able to knock in a Jesse Forsberg pass into the crease by an outstretchd UBC netminder Matt Hewitt for the overtime winner.
With the win, the No. 3 ranked Huskies improve to 7-1-1 on the season. UBC drops to 5-4-0.
Saskatchewan's Michael Sofillas opened the scoring at 11:36 on a quick transition into the UBC zone in the first period. His shot beat Matt Hewitt into the top of the net stick side. Manraj Hayer tied the game with under two minutes left in the first period. His redirection at the side of the net at 18:45 on a shot by Riley Guenther beat Huskies goalie Jordon Cooke.
Just 42 seconds into the second period, Logan McVeigh gave Saskatchewan the lead with a power play goal. He potted a Hewitt rebound on a Josh Roach shot for the lead. The lead didn't last long. Austin Vetterl received in front of the net with the man-advantage to beat Cooke at 3:55 in the frame.
McVeigh scored his second of the period on a quick transition beating Hewitt five-hole at 16:37. But before the 20 minutes were up, the T-Birds had knotted the game again. Chase Clayton scored on a scramble in front of the net at 19:41.
In the seven goal game, Roach recorded three assists and McVeigh added one goal and two assists for Saskatchewan.
Hewitt finished the game making 37 saves, while Cooke stopped 22 at the other end of the ice for the Huskies.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night in Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
