SASKATOON - University of Saskatchewan goaltender Taran Kozun made 24 saves en route to a 6-0 Huskies' shutout over the visiting University of Regina Cougars Saturday night in Rutherford Rink.
Kozun, who recorded the shutout in his first career Canada West men's hockey game, made 13 saves in the first period, six in the second and five in the final frame.
Regina netminder Michael Herringer made 36 saves in the loss for the Cougars.
With the win the Huskies open the season 2-0-0, while the Cougars are 0-2-0. A night earlier in Regina, the Huskies opened the season with an 8-2 win.
Saskatchewan didn't find the scoreboard until nearly midway through the second period, when John Lawrence opened the scoring at 8:04 in when a rebound landed directly on his stick. He was able to find the net before Herringer could get to his side of the crease. Connor Gay extended the Huskies lead at 16:35. Gay collected a Herringer rebound and slid it by him stick side.
Josh Roach, Alex Forsberg, Jesse Forsberg and Connor Gay all added goals for the Huskies in the third period.
Jesse Forsberg and Roach each recorded a goal and an assist in the game, while Parker Thomas tallied two assists.
Regina was 0-2 on the power play, while the Huskies converted on just one of 11 extra man advantages in the game.
The Huskies remain at home to host the Lethbridge Pronghorns next weekend, while the Cougars travel to Calgary to meet the Mount Royal Cougars.
